PROSPECTIVE BAND MEMBERS The band program at Murray exists to give young musicians the requisite, fundamental skills to become excellent musicians in high school and beyond. The band uses Essential Elements 2000 for the basis of music study. Students also learn music history as it relates to literature spanning a wide array of musical styles and genres. There are three band class sections: Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced Bands. We also offer a Percussion Ensemble Class. Each level presents progressively more difficult literature and technique. There are also extracurricular offerings in Jazz
Orchestra and Chamber Ensemble. The bands perform regularly for Florida Music Performance Assessments. The band also performs extensively around our community. Band is open to anyone who wants to learn to play an instrument at anytime. Students wishing to audition for the Center for the Arts in our band program are asked to complete an audition process. AUDITION REQUIREMENTS: Most students have not begun any formal training on a band instrument by the time they reach 6th grade. Therefore, the SJCCA Band Audition simply consists of a demonstration of musical talent by the student. (on recorder, percussion etc) I also conduct an interview with the student and parent/guardian to ascertain the potential commitment and desire of the family to make this undertaking.
The rental or purchase of a quality instrument approved by the director is strongly recommended for SJCCA students.
